VC Alumni Fishing Derby

3rd Annual Alumni Fishing Derby

"FISH ON!" was the call on 6 June 2009 at Harmon Lake! Well, not quite, as the winds made fly fishing extremely tough that Saturday morning and throughout the day, but great times were had by all who participated in the third annual Vancouver College Alumni Fishing Derby.  The winner was Dexter Juric, who managed to trick a feisty trout (biggest) into taking his offering of a leech and thus the first place trophy - with his win a professionally guided trip for two via jet boat to the pristine Upper Pitt River for fall salmon.  The Holler boys (Chris '02 and Andrew '03) were first time participants, but they didn't disappoint with a couple of fish that landed them second and third place respectively.

However, the highlight of the event was dinner where the group made its way to Corbett Lake Lodge for a fine four-course dinner that consisted of wild mushroom soup, a light shrimp salad, prime rib dinner and dessert of whipped cream, fresh strawberries, and ice cream.  Many stories were exchanged; the odd glass of wine consumed and laughs shared over yesteryear, and of course, the many tales of the big one that got away and secret lures that made our days.

It truly was a magnificent way to end the day.  Again we had representation from five decades of alumni - 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000's, and would love to see more of you out there hurling fly or two and sharing in the moments that are created out on the water.

Thanks to our major sponsors, Pacific Angler and Tom Crean, providing prizes and dinner, the 3rd Annual Fishing Derby was a terrific success.

Postscript. Please don't feel that you need to be a great fisherman to participate, as all are welcome, and to those that are just beginner fisherman: I assure you, you will learn plenty.
