Reserves Shine – Irish Defeat West Van

October 25, 2008

VC Football Game 8 West VanO’Hagan Field – Football is supposed to be a team game and the Fighting Irish proved that is spades as they defeated the West Vancouver Highlanders 41-7 in their final home game at O’Hagan Field.  Many of their reserve players had outstanding games that contributed significantly to the win.

VC received the ball to start the game but went three and out and punted to West Van.  The Irish put up an equally stout defense and forced a Highlander punt. The punt was very short allowing VC to take over deep in West Van territory.  A run by Garret Sanvido and a Sam Sekhon pass to Patrick Bull set the scene for a 3-yard run into the end zone by Brandon Roney to put the Irish up 7-0.   The Irish defense held again after the score and forced another West Van punt, allowing College to take over near midfield.  Sanvido moving the ball both on the ground and in the air managed to get it to the 23-yard line where Sekhon threw an excellent pass to James Emerson who went in for the second score of the day for VC.  West Van finally started to get a bit of offensive momentum, however, a third down pass was picked off by Chris Adams deep in Irish territory to end the threat.

Sam Sekhon hit Brett Robillard with a 17-yard strike to open the second quarter but the Irish coughed up the ball on the next play.  Not to be outdone, the Highlanders took the ball back but fumbled it themselves.  Matthew Pauls fell on the ball, giving VC possession on their one-inch line.  They tried to move the ball up field but a string of penalties forced a fourth down punt.  The snap proved too difficult to handle and West Van recovered the ball inside the VC 10-yard line.  A quarterback sneak finally put the Highlanders on the scoreboard but it would be their only scoring of the afternoon.  After taking the kickoff and taking advantage of a Highlander major penalty, the Irish moved the ball to the 32-yard line.  From there, Brandon Roney scored his second touchdown of the game running up the middle and out racing the defenders to make it 20-7.  West Van took the ball back but the Irish defense held them on a fourth down attempt.  On the next play, Sekhon hooked up again with James Emerson again for a 57 yard pass and run to make it 27-7 at the half.

The game was put out of reach early in the second half.  West Van took the opening kickoff but went three and out.  With the ball on their own 35-yard line, the Irish tried a reverse and Kevin Paterson took the hand off and raced 65 yards for another VC score.

The fourth quarter saw West Van continue to struggle with the snap on the shotgun offense and create opportunities for the Irish defense to sack them.  Deep in their own end and facing a fourth down punt, the kick was very short and went out of bounds on the visitor’s 18-yard line.  Sekhon found Gary Sanghera with a 10 yard pass then Bryan Poobalasingam did the rest going in for his first major of the year from the 2-yard line.

The win for the Irish moved their lifetime record against West Vancouver to 18-2.
