Irish Football 2008

Revenge is Sweet

October 18, 2008

VC Football 2008 - Mount DouglasO’Hagan Field – Revenge is a dish best served cold! Fans will recall the Rams laid a licking on the Irish at their game played in Victoria last year.  Facing the possibility of dropping to third place in the standing with a loss to the Mt. Douglas Rams, the Irish returned the favour and came up with a big game defeating the Rams 35-14 before a home field crowd.

The Irish took possession first on their own 25-yard line.  Garret Sanvido quickly set the tone of the game rattling off a 32-yard gain to put the ball inside Ram territory.  A few plays later Sam Sekhon found tight end, Cody Rossi, with a 28-yard strike to put VC quickly up 7-0.  Mt. Douglas came right back and moved the ball down the field to the Irish 7-yard line but, on fourth down, their attempted  field goal went wide.  After trading possessions the Rams went on the attack again but this time a big third down sack by Geno Lalana and a fourth down interception by Chris Adams (who returned it 39 yards) gave VC the ball back at midfield.  Sanvido helped move the ball to the Rams 31-yard line where the Sekhon / Rossi duo hooked up again for another touchdown to move VC out in front 14-0 as the quarter ended.

The Rams next series ended like the previous one as Francesco Renzullo picked off an errant pass and returned it 22 yards to the Mt. Douglas 43-yard line.  VC moved the ball down to the Ram’s four but proceeded to miss the field goal attempt.  Again, the Rams came charging back but another big tackle by Geno Lalana on third down at the Irish 7-yard line and a subsequent incomplete pass gave the Irish the ball back deep in their own end.  The backfield duo of Sanvido and Renzullo moved the ball back to midfield.  A VC penalty set them back but on the next play, Chris Adams took a reverse handoff from Garret Sanvido and raced 25-yards to the Rams 35–yard line.  Sam Sekhon then found Thomas Scrubb over the middle for a 27-yard pass to the visitor’s 8-yard line.  A couple of plays later Sanvido went in to increase the margin to 21-0.  Again Mt. Douglas came back with a long kickoff return but with the ball on the Irish 7-yard line and one second left on the clock, an incomplete pass sent the teams to the dressing room for the half.

The Rams took the opening kickoff but were forced to punt it away.  The Irish appeared to have a large gain on their first play but a subsequent fumble gave the ball back to the Rams.  A big third down knock down of a pass by Chris Adams gave the ball back to the Irish at their own 35-yard line.  With Garret Sanvido pounding the ball downfield coupled with another Sekhon to Rossi strike the Irish took the ball to the Ram 6-yard line where Sanvido scored his second major of the game to make the score 28-0.  Mt. Douglas finally managed to score late in the quarter to narrow the margin.

Early in the final quarter the Rams appeared to have scored on a long pass (from the tailback) and run but one of the gentlemen in the striped shirts alertly pointed out that the preceding handoff was “forward” and you cannot have two forward passes on the same play.  The Rams then had to punt and VC got the ball back on the Ram 39-yard line.  This time it was all Jonathan Chan as he moved the ball to the Rams 5-yard line and then scored the fifth Irish major of the game.  The Rams managed to put one more score on the board but it was too little too late and the Irish went away with their third conference victory.
