Irish Crush Eagles
The Vancouver College Varsity Football team played host against the Carson Graham Eagles this weekend. Carson Graham defeated the Irish in the 2001 BC Football Championship game in BC Place stadium. That loss still weighs heavily on the minds of the 2002 Graduating Class.
This weekend the Irish crushed the Eagles. The final score was 42-2 in favour of the Irish. Below is an excerpt from the game article. For a complete Irish schedule check the Upcoming Events Page.

O’Hagan Field – At the outset it looked like the Fighting Irish
were going to be in for a ball game but a dominating second quarter offensive
display saw VC pound the Carson Graham Eagles 42-3 to win their second conference
game in a row. The win for the Irish
improved their lifetime record against the Eagles to 10-2.
Carson took possession
first and moved the ball down the field but lost possession on a fourth down
gamble. VC got the ball but gave it
right back with a fumble. The Eagle
running back then broke through the VC lines and raced towards the end zone but
a touchdown saving tackle by Chris Adams
gave them the ball on the Irish 5-yard line.
The College defense stiffened and Carson was forced to settle for a
field goal of 27 yards. The ensuing
kickoff was returned 43 yards by James
Emerson to give VC possession at midfield.
Garret Sanvido took it 15
yards closer to the 35-yard line and then Sam
Sekhon threw a perfect strike to James
Emerson at the goal line to put the Irish out in front to stay at 6-3. The Eagles tried to come back but were
intercepted by Lucas Cordick on the
Irish 22-yard line. VC started to move
the ball downfield on the strength of excellent offensive line blocking and
strong running by Garret Sanvido as
the quarter ended.
The wheels fell off for
Carson Graham in the second quarter. On
the first play, Sanvido raced 30 yards for the second Irish score and he
converted his own major with a two point run.
The following series saw the Eagles go three and out and the Irish take
possession near midfield. Again, it was
Sanvido leading the charge as College moved the ball downfield to the three
where he scored his second touchdown of the game to put the Irish up 21-3. After another Eagle three and out, the Irish
went to the air. Sam Sekhon found Thomas
Scrubb with a 58-yard pass and run and, from the 10 yard line, threw a
strike to Cody Rossi for another
College score. After the Eagles were
forced to punt for the third consecutive time, the Irish stayed in the
air. Sekhon threw a swing pass to Garret Sanvido who went 31 yards before
being knocked out of bounds and found Cody
Rossi again with a 33 yard pass to put the ball on the Carson 3-yard
line. From there Brandon Roney found the end zone to put VC up 35-3. The kickoff following the Roney touchdown
kind of summed up the way the day was going for the Eagles. Their returner decided to try a reverse
handoff to generate some yards but, unfortunately, his partner was not on the
same page and he just tossed the ball towards the end zone. Jeremy
Sroka tackled the returner and pushed the ball over the goal line where Lucas Cordick jumped on it for another
Irish touchdown, making it 42-3 as the half came to a merciful end for Carson.
With the referees now
invoking the “mercy” rule, the clock was put on running time and the second
half was over before you knew it.
The Irish substituted
liberally and while the offence was unable to generate any further scoring the
defense continued its strong play led by Cody
Rossi who added two sacks to his totals.
