Adams Does it All – Irish Shutout
Knights
September 13, 2008
O’Hagan Field – Defensive
back, Chris Adams, stole the show,
scoring 14 of the Fighting Irish points in a 20-0 shutout victory over arch
rival, St. Thomas More Knights before a sellout crowd at O’Hagan Field on
Homecoming Day.
The
game started out with the Irish’s James
Emerson taking the opening kickoff and returning it 37 yards to
midfield. They proceeded to move it down
to the Knight’s 21-yard line where the drive stalled and Adams was called upon
to kick a 38-yard field goal to put College up 3-0. VC kicked off and managed to hold the
Knights to three and out and took over possession, again near midfield. The Irish drive also stalled and again it was
Chris Adams to the rescue as he
pinned STM back on its own one-yard line with a 59-yard punt.
STM opened the second
quarter with possession but and alert Matthew
Pauls picked off an errant Knight pass and returned it 15 yards to the
visitor’s seven-yard line. Two plays
later Garret Sanvido dove into the
end zone to put the Irish up 10-0. That
touchdown seemed to wake STM up and they started to move the ball back down the
field for the first time in the afternoon.
A series of penalties, however, stymied the drive and they were again forced
to punt. Late in the quarter the Irish
got the ball back deep in their own end.
Garret Sanvido gave them some
breathing room with runs of 22 and 17 yards then quarterback, Sam Sekhon, found his backup, Patrick Bull (who had been slotted into
the wide receiver position) with a 44 yard pass to put the ball on the Knight 7
yard line. With only seconds remaining
on the clock until the half, Chris Adams
came in again and nailed a 24 yard field goal to put College up 13-0 going into
the dressing room.
The third quarter saw
neither team able to generate sufficient offence to score any points although
towards the end of the quarter, the Knights were driving towards the Irish end
zone.
Starting the final
stanza, the Knights were facing a third down deep in the VC end and their
quarterback tried to pass for a first down but it was picked off by, guess who,
Chris Adams, on the Irish five-yard
line. He proceeded to race down the
sidelines for a spectacular 95-yard touchdown romp. He even had enough wind left in him to
convert his own touchdown and give the Irish a commanding 20-0 lead.
Now anyone who has ever
played STM knows they do not quit and today was no exceptions as they came
right back with a long drive. In the end
the Irish defense led by Francisco
Renzullo, Cody Rossi, Geno Lelana and Lucas
Cordick managed to hold them off the score sheet to preserve the Irish
shutout.
The win for VC extended
their series lead to 32-11 and wins in four of their last five meetings. The victory also represented the 60th
career win for Irish Head Coach, Todd
Bernett.
The Irish now travel south of the border to play Lynden Christian next Friday and a non-conference match.
