The Vancouver College Alumni Association's President, Steve Eivemark, attended the Graduation Awards Ceremony last week. The awards are typically given out during convocation, but since the event is already quite long, the school decided to hold a seperate awards ceramony this year.
Steve was there on behalf of the Alumni Association. He had to present the Pro-Life award to the graduating student who best represented the Pro-Life club. He also gave a speech to the graduating class, welcoming them to the Alumni Association.
Here is an email he sent me about the event.

So as you know, I
had the opportunity to attend the graduating class' Awards Assembly on
Friday. The event was also attended by the grades 10 and 11 to give them a
glimpse of what they can expect.
The event started
off with each of the school body heads (student council, lettermen, and
edmundians) doing a quick presentation handing off the baton to their
successors.
Then there was a
gift presentation to the three departing staff members - Kate Keogh, Mike
Petrychenko, and unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the third
person.
Then the awards
presentations. And let me tell you there are a lot of gifted kids in this
school. Really amazing to hear some of the academic accomplishments.
I and Jim Canil got to present the Arch Bishop Adam Exner Pro Life award
along with our $200 bursary to Jeffrey Abaquin (the program still shows the
award sponsored in part by Tom Crean and Kearny Funeral Homes - nice little plug
for you there, Tom). From what Jim tells me, Jeffrey is an outstanding
recipient and well deserving of this award.
At the end of it, I
had the opportunity to speak to the graduating class to welcome them into the
alumni ranks. By this time, it had been a pretty lengthy event and I
could tell the kids were getting restless. So I cut my speech short just a
bit. The folks I was sitting next to congratulated me on the shortest
speech of the day.
Last they
ceremoniously raised the Track & Field Provincial Championship banner to the
rafters. It's been a while since we've seen a banner raised, so that was
fun.
All in all, it was a
good event. Next up, the year end BBQ tomorrow night. Hope to
see you there.
