Vancouver College Ranked #1 in the Province
The Fraser Institutes annual high school report card ranks each school in British Columbia. This year Vancouver College was ranked #1, tied with 4 other schools. VC Principal Dave Hardy sent me this message about the results:
I am pleased to report that in the Fraser Institute’s Report Card on Secondary Schools in British Columbia, released May 9, that Vancouver College scored a perfect 10 out of 10 and subsequently, along with four other schools was ranked number 1 in academic performance based on the results of the 2006/07 Provincial exams.
This marks the second time in four years that Vancouver College has scored 10 out of 10 and has been ranked number 1.
This year’s report card is different from previous years because of the change in Ministry requirements regarding Provincial exams. Students are now required to write 5 Provincial exams: English 10, Mathematics 10, Science 10, Social Studies 11 and English 12. This year’s report card is based only on the results of these five exams.
There are two indicators of School effectiveness used by the Fraser Institute where Vancouver College achieved at the very highest level. Vancouver College students achieved at a much higher level than would have been predicted based on the average number of years of education of the most educated parent in the family. (This last bit of information came from the 2001 census data provided to the Fraser Institute by Statistics Canada).
The second area where Vancouver College did exceptionally well was the very close relationship (0.8) between the school mark and the Provincial exam mark. This close relationship indicates the school is giving students valid and reliable feedback from their school tests regarding knowledge of material contained in the course.
Although we are justifiably proud of our student performance for 2006/07 we recognize very clearly that this report card is only a snapshot of school effectiveness. We remain committed to providing today’s young men with educational experiences that will lead to the development of the whole person: culturally, emotionally intellectually, physically, socially and in particular, spiritually. The development of the whole person remains the cornerstone of Vancouver College and be assured that we will keep that in the forefront as we continue to work with the community to improve our level of performance in all areas.
