Pub owner Matt MacNeil has been named business person of the year and Bob Wright, founder of the Oak Bay Marine Group, was given a lifetime achievement award at the annual Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce awards banquet last night.
MacNeil has made a name for himself in Victoria by not only launching and running successful businesses but as a key player in founding the Downtown Victoria Business Association, where he earned a reputation as a person who thinks in terms of the community as a whole, not just his own interests.
MacNeil's latest venture is transforming the heritage Bank Building, at 1022 Government St., into a pub called The Bard and Banker, which is expected to open in June. Once the home of the Spirit of Christmas store, the high-profile building at Government and Fort streets was at one time a bank which employed Canadian literary legend Robert Service, who worked there as a teller in the early 1900s.
MacNeill also owns the Penny Farthing Public House on Oak Bay Avenue and the Irish Times pub at 1200 Government St.
The award was presented at a sold-out business awards dinner at the Fairmont Empress Hotel ballroom.....
